Veolia Water Technologies - a key player for sustainable solutions in the aquaculture industry


People have never eaten as much fish in the world as they have for half a century. In the last five decades, the global supply of fish for human consumption has outpaced population growth. According to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), fish consumption has doubled. Today it reaches more than 20 kilos per year and per inhabitant against an average of 10 kilos in 1960. This trend is largely due to the growth of aquaculture, which plays an important role in world food.


Overfishing is a huge problem throughout the world’s oceans. Fish are being removed faster than they can replenish themselves, and populations are dwindling. With its huge amount of potential, aquaculture represents a viable alternative to fishing. Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms in both coastal and inland areas involving interventions in the rearing process to enhance production. It now accounts for 50 percent of the world's fish that is used for food.


The aquaculture industry faces the challenge of providing an ample supply of juvenile fish (smolts) and fully grown fishes by focusing on their welfare while having limited space available and limited freshwater resources. This expanding industry thus has to use space and freshwater in a sustainable way by:

- reducing energy and water consumption by implementing recovering solutions; - enhanced control of the rearing environment, animal health and welfare

- bio security.

As such, Kaldnes® RAS and RAS2020 are the VWT's well known technologies responding to the key challenges faced by today's aquaculture industry.


Developed by Krüger Kaldnes in 2008, the Kaldnes® RAS process is dedicated to smolt hatcheries specializing in raising fish up to 300/500g. The concept of RAS is to reuse a volume of water through continual treatment and delivery to the organisms being cultured. Kaldnes® RAS includes among other systems two market leading VWT technologies:

- HydrotechTM filters, the best microscreen filters for aquaculture currently available on the market

AnoxKaldnes MBBR, the cutting edge Moving Bed Bioreactor (MBBR) fixed biofilm technology, which is the biological engine of the RAS.

The result is compact plants with very small footprints, drastically reduced use of piping, and optimization of pumping head and energy consumption. Compared to traditional flow-through hatcheries, the RAS system reduces water consumption by up to 99%, while removing organic matter, ammonium, nitrogen, suspended solids, CO2 and harmful bacteria/viruses in order to avoid fish mortality.


Developed by Krüger A/S and a patented system, RAS2020 is a unique and innovative grow-out solution dedicated to land-based fish farming specializing in raising fish until their maturity.

RAS 2020 is a flexible, modular recirculating aquaculture system with optimized process logistic, low operating costs and reduced footprint.

The RAS2020 is well suited for species such as salmon, trout, kingfish, sea bass, pike perch among others.

The fish are farmed in a controlled environment based on the state-of-the-art recirculation including water treatment technology ensuring stability to optimize growth, reduce feed conversion ratio (FCR) and improve survival. RAS2020 has brought in optimal flexibility in RAS systems resulting in

minimum handling and moving of the fish. The facility takes up considerably less space than conventional land-based facilities.

Depending on customer’s needs, Kaldnes® RAS and RAS2020 can be combined for a global management and control of the fish farming chain.

Building One of the world's largest smolt plant - again!


Veolia Norwegian Business Unit Krüger Kaldnes (Recirculating Aquaculture System, RAS) has contracted with Lerøy to design and build a complete, turnkey farm for Atlantic salmon post-smolts, in partnership with TotalBetong for Civil Work. Lerøy Sjøtroll, Kjærelva plant will be one of the world's largest salmon post smolt. 


• Contract price: 650 Million NOK 

• Construction start: May 2017 

• Completion: Spring 2019 (2020 will be the first full year of production) 

• Capacity: approx. 4,000 tons of smolt/year as: - 6 million 500 gr. Post-smolt - 6 million 160 gr. smolt • First delivery of smolt: 2019 

• Maximum feeding: 21,4 tons / day 

• Total fish tank volume: 23.964 m3 

• Total building area: 20.200m2 

The plant includes 12 departments, as two hatcheries and 10 RAS departments from start-feeding to Post smolt stage. Smolt and Post smolt departments are designed to operate from freshwater to brackish water up to 20 ppt salinity. The turn key solution also includes, as among auxiliary solutions:

• centralized automatic dead fish collection and ensilage 

• Centralized fully automatic feeding system 

• high tech monitoring and automation (with complete SCADA and PLS)

Stadpipe, as Krüger Kaldnes sub-contractor, will deliver all pipe work.

New research centre for Atlantic salmon opened


Krüger Kaldnes is one of the technology suppliers for the new research center on closed containment systems for Atlantic salmon.

Four Norwegian research institutions, two outside of Norway and several industry partners from technology and the aquaculture industry have now started operations at a centre for innovation in closed-containment systems. The centre, CtrlAQUA, has been given NOK 200 million and eight years to reach its own ambition to make closed-containment systems for salmon up to one kilogram off-the-shelf systems.

On Tuesday May 26, Norwegian Minister of Fisheries Elisabeth Aspaker honored the centre by visiting Nofima at Sunndalsøra as part of the opening of the centre: "I have great expectations for the achievements of CtrlAQUA. Even though 8 years is a long time, it is urgent that we find solutions to reach the goals. CtrlAQUA is an important part of this," said Aspaker.

Opened by The Research Council of Norway CtrlAQUA is one of the Centres for Research-Based Innovation (SFI), a major program created by the Research Council of Norway.

The formal opening by the Research Council took place on Wednesday May 27 during a kick-off meeting at Sunndalsøra, Norway, when Director of Innovation in the Research Council Eirik Normann presented the SFI plaque to CtrlAQUA Centre Director Bendik Fyhn Terjesen of Nofima.

The primary goal of the SFI program is to strengthen companies' capacity for innovation, and to develop leading industry-relevant research institutions. Nofima is accompanied by five solid research institutions in CtrlAQUA: Uni Research, the University of Bergen, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the Freshwater Institute in the US and the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

Solving challenges limiting growth in aquaculture Aspaker stated in her speech on Tuesday May 27 that the goal of the CtrlAQUA SFI is perfectly compatible with the government's ambitions for the aquaculture industry. The report "Value creation from productive seas in 2050" predicts that aquaculture will have increased in volume five times and increased in value eight times in the years until 2050.

Technological and biological innovations in closed-containment production systems, in which the environment of the salmon is separated from the surroundings by an impermeable barrier, may be important for the development of the Norwegian aquaculture industry.

The main focus of the centre is innovation in closed-containment systems for the most vulnerable periods of the salmon production cycle, such as the first seawater phase, known as the "postsmolt" phase, when the fish weigh up to about 1 kilogram. The most important innovation in the centre will be reliable and efficient production of postsmolts in closed-containment systems on land or in the sea. The industry can in this way obtain a good alternative or supplement to the current production technology using open cages. 

New aquaculture contract awarded Krüger Kaldnes


Krüger Kaldnes has signed a DB contract for delivery of a new RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems) plant to Osland settefisk in Sognefjorden, Norway.

The contract comprises delivery of a complete Kaldnes® RAS solution for a greenfield smolt hatchery. Deliveries include process- and electrical equipment and installation for hatchery and fry departments.

The project has been developed in conjunction with the Danish company Gråkjær that has been awarded the contract for civil works incl. tanks and piping and other auxiliary equipment. The contracts to Krüger Kaldnes and Gråkjær will together constitute the delivery of a complete smolt hatchery.

Giant commitment on salmon smolt in Nordland


Helgeland Smolt, with Krüger Kaldnes as processing supplier, is now building what seems to be the world's biggest production site for salmon smolt, (which is a juvenile salmon ready to be released in sea cages) - at Reppen in Rødøy municipality, in the county of Nordland. The production site will contain seven departments from hatching till extended growth. The process can manage both salt- and freshwater. Total basin volume is 21.700 cubic meters. Optimal production will deliver 7 to 8 million juvenile fish with a biomass (weight of the fish) reaching 2000 metric tons. The hydraulic capacity in the recycling site for the process water totals 35.000 cubic meters per hour. Total building costs will amount to abt 300 million NOK.

- Our goal is a good site with an equally good technological solution, says Tor-Arne Gransjoen, general manager in Helgeland Smolt. He is a pioneer in the development of this kind of industry in his home county and he is also the driving force in the successful site of Sundsfjord Smolt. But despite an expansion the capacity again has reached its full peak. The choice has been between another expansion - or a new production site.

- We just had to adjust the capacity if we should keep up. Due to a risk assessment the choice fell on a new site. For us it will give better supply guarantee if one of our sites, against all odds, shall have to close down for a limited period of time, says Gransjoen, who can add that affected authorities, local as well as on county level, are very positive to the new project.

Better conditions

As mentioned earlier this is a production site with a unique size - with basins for fish up to 500 grams. We have interviewed Bendik Fyhn Terjesen, senior researcher at NOFIMA situated in Sunndalsoera. Here NOFIMA has made several tests with salmon smolt in recycled water. On a general basis, independent of supplier, mr Terjesen sums up their research so far, in view of both size of the fingerling and its welfare:

- Research this far shows that the fish, after being raised in enclosures both on land and sea, have a high rate of survival. With reduced salinity in the water in RAS, a better fish skin health is also obtained. Good fish skin health is very important at this stage of growth and reduces mortality when the fish is let go in new environments. At the same time the growth in the sea is equal to, if not better, than by traditional smolt production.

Lately there has been an intensified debate concerning the aquaculture industry and the increasing occurrence of salmon lice.

- When the fish is in enclosures on land the said lice will be either reduced to zero or kept on a minimal level. Longer time in closed facilities will no doubt reduce the spreading of salmon lice, due to the fact that salmons are kept for a shorter time in sea-cages (merds). Therefore the use of enclosures on land will become a very important means of combating especially the salmon lice. Improved technology and thus water quality is a very hot topic in the aquaculture industry. Therefore, more research is now engaged in such work, he says.

Current regulations allow for closed land produced smolts up to one kilogram. It would be useful if it could also include sea-based fish closed containment.

- Currently we have done experiments with fish up to one kilogram. It has gone well when adding some special care and a few adjustments during relocations. So it looks promising, concludes Terjesen.

Hands full

Aquaculture-director of process-supplier Krüger Kaldnes, mr Marius Haegh, has enough to keep him busy for the time being.

- We are experiencing a rapid development, with larger deliveries. The facility at Marine Harvest in Steinsvik on Sunnmoere is large. But Helgeland Smolt on Reppen will double this size. Our RAS is founded on the unique MBBR cleansing technology developed at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. We supplied Sundsfjord. Now we are also selected as supplier for this great initiative. Internationally we are attracting new customers. We are proud, concludes mr Haegh. 

Veolia enters the US market with "Kaldnes®RAS" technology


Veolia aims to take the lead in the US "blue" revolution.

Krüger Kaldnes was invited for the second year to participate at the "International Conference on Recirculating Aquaculture" fair and conference in Roanoke, West Virginia. ICRA is the main event in the US in innovative technologies and solutions for aquaculture and fish.

Dr. Frederic Gaumet, who is the Global Business development and aquaculture specialist at Krüger Kaldnes, led a conference entitled "RAS - Innovations and ways to the future " and illustrated his presentation with case studies from Nordic experience in salmon production". Together with strong and pro-active support from Veolia water tem in the US, Veolia water demonstrated that they are ready to enter this market and provide customers and investors with the best solution as Know How, competences, support and services within the USA.

Krüger Kaldnes awarded aquaculture contract from Swiss Perch farmer


Contract awarded for extension of a Perch Hatchery in Switzerland.

In July 2014, Krüger Kaldnes was awarded a new contract for Kaldnes® RAS in Switzerland. This is the second collaboration between Krüger Kaldnes and the Swiss company Valperca AG this year. In June 2014 Valperca AG signed the first contract with Krüger Kaldnes for retro-fitting 3 of their existing water treatment systems for aquaculture. The contract value for the first contract was ~4,5 M NOK and included process design, equipment deliveries and site services for Kaldnes® RAS. All deliveries will be completed by medio October 2014.

The new contract refers to the extension of the existing hatchery of the group (to produce juvenile fish) located in Chavornay, close to Lausanne. Krüger Kaldnes will again supply process design, engineering, equipment and site services

Valperca AG produces European Perch, which is a highly appreciated and highly priced fish in Switzerland.

The Kaldnes®RAS design is a very compact and cost effective water treatment system for fish culture, delivering top quality water for fish, with very low maintenance and operating costs. The Kaldnes®RAS concept comprise an optimal combination of two well-known Veolia technologies; Hydrotech microscreens and AnoxKaldnes™ MBBR. In addition to these, Kaldnes® RAS includes other water treatment solutions and SCADA by Krüger Kaldnes.

The Swiss company Valperca AG has already expressed interest to continue working with Krüger Kaldnes on future plans and projects, with an ambition to retrofit all their existing sites and to construct new facilities to grow their production further.

Sundsfjord Smolt - reuse and quality management!

Krüger Kaldnes has recently signed an agreement with Sundsfjord Smolt for the delivery of a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) for reuse and quality management of process water for land based fish farming - Kaldnes™ - RAS.

The company with its head office in Sandefjord, Norway, does not hide the fact that the aquaculture industry is an important priority area.
"This is yet another proof that more and more fish farmers pay an interest in our eminent solutions", says a satisfied Marius Hægh, sales manager in the aquaculture-department of Krüger Kaldnes. He continues:

"Our RAS-solution is founded on the well-established AnoxKaldnes™ MBBR combined with Hydrotech drumfilters. These versatile technologies are well proven within this market and provide great benefits to our clients".

Along with key knowledge about the industry Krüger Kaldnes is well positioned for further growth for delivering water treatment systems to the aquaculture market.

Flexibility and compactness characterizes the new facility for salmon smolt production. The new treatment facility will be placed in existing buildings, scheduled to be operational in May 2012.

Recycling facility for Marine Harvest!

Marine Harvest in Norway has awarded Krüger Kaldnes the contract for construction of a new recycling facility at the hatchery on Dravlaus in Dalsfjord. The recycling plant will be built for the nursery and pre-ongrowing part of the plant and thus completes the recycling facility provided by Krüger Kaldnes in 2010 which was created for the ongrowing part of the fishfarm. The total capacity for the two recycling plants is equivalent to a feeding of more than 5000 kg per day and an annual production of about 5 million smolts. The project includes a turnkey treatment plant where the main process is based on the patented Kaldnes™ MBBR biofilm process. The treatment process also includes Hydrotech drum filters, CO2-removal, instrumentation, pumping equipment, PLC board and a fully operational control system.

Turnkey treatment plant to Marine Harvest

Krüger Kaldnes in Norway has been awarded the contract for a fish farming project by Marine Harvest in Norway together with the Norwegian company BioDesign. The contract covers the construction of the water treatment part for a new recirculation plant for smolt in Dalsfjord, Norway.

The project comprises a turnkey treatment plant based on the patented AnoxKaldnes® MBBR process. The process package also includes drum filters, CO2 stripping, instrumentation, pump equipment and control panel with PLC.

The plant has been designed with the objective of developing tomorrow's technology for recirculation plants with low energy consumption, extremely compact solutions and environmentally adapted to modern fish farming.

Marine Harvest is the world's largest producer of farm raised salmon and will construct a series of new recirculation plants in the years to come. We have developed a completely new and innovative method to treat waters in recirculation plants, a method that is green, energy-efficient and extremely compact.
