Aquaculture

Aquaculture

Hydrotech microscreens are used to improve water quality in Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS), Effluent and Intake on fish farms.

The normal motivation for introducing the Hydrotech filters to Aquaculture is economical. In a fish farm, you can remove up to:

► 80% of total BOD
► 84% of total phosphorous
► 91% of the solids in the water

This is done without extreme investments and just by using microscreens.

Recirculated system (RAS)

Fish farming in recirculated systems is one of the most expanding approaches for producing fish and other species for the aquaculture industry.

A key point in a successful RAS installation is particle control. Compared to competing technologies Hydrotech filters ensures a gentle and immediate removal of particles. Over 90% removal is possible in our filters!

That is VERY efficient, but a lot of issues must be considered when designing RAS, otherwise particles may be dissolved or destroyed before they reach the screen.

► Choice of filter opening in microscreens
► Shape of the tanks outlets
► Stocking densities of fish
► Pipes and distance to microscreens
► Aeration in tanks for oxygen supply
► Type of feed

Aside from removing major loads off the biofilter, the screen also constitutes an absolute filtration step, removing parasites from the recirculation loop. In some installations like eel farms, this feature has become a crucial success factor.

Hydrotech has a team of biologist and engineers available for support for optimal use of our filters in RAS projects.

You can find more about filtration is RAS in our application note here: Hydrotech filters in recirculated systems.

Intake water

There is increasing awareness that quality of inlet water is very important for successful fish farming.

It is not just the chemical quality of water, but also what is pumped to the farm with the water that is important. Even fungus can be partly removed and if using UV treatment of the intake water, filtration will dramatically  increase the UV effect as most particles are removed.

What is the economic potential if proper inlet filtration is installed?
Tests on a shrimp farm in Malaysia with Hydrotech filter filtering inlet water in combination with UV showed significant improvements in both growth and feed conversion:

► Feeding increased by 253 %
► Feed conversion were improved by 20 %
► Final harvesting was improved by 300 %

This was a 46 days test on shrimp ponds where 2 identical ponds were stocked each with 75.000 post larvae. The harvest result was:

► Pond 1 with traditional intake water: 71 kg
► Pond 2 with Hydrotech and UV installed: 214 kg

Effluent water

If you want to reduce waste in the outlet waste from your fish farm, the good news is that the major part of waste in water are in the form of particles.

Over 90% of your solids can be filtered away with Hydrotech microscreens and this means over 80% phosphorus + about 80% BOD reduction.

When deciding on the filter model to be used, some parameters need to be taken into account, especially the strength and size of the particles. Hydrotech can help you with the sizing. Among others, the following conditions must be considered to achieve optimal efficiency of a downstream filter:

► Choice of filter opening in microscreens
► Design of ponds/tanks or race ways
► Mechanical destruction of particles
► Feed quality

Aquarium Life support

Low Head Life Support Systems gives clearer water, saves on energy and minimizes the loss of artificial sea water.

Water passes from a Hydrotech filter to a protein skimmer. This combined process eliminates even the smallest particles that might otherwise impair visibility in the water.

The final step in the process is a trickling filter, filled with elements to get rid of ammonia by bacterial degradation and to ensure degassing and correct oxygen levels in the water.

To ensure total control of hygienic conditions in the water a small amount of ozone is added to the protein skimmer.

Traditional installations with sand filters has proven energy expensive. So why not use new technology that gives same or better clear water? Why not become as cost efficient as possible?

The technology will also make your Aquarium even more environmentally friendly. Filters from Hydrotech are a key component for aquariums to fulfil these ambitions.

Zoo gardens & Koi ponds

Water ponds are important for natural environments in Zoo Gardens in order to secure "natural" habitats for the animals.

High water consumption is often a major cost when operating a Zoo Garden. With Hydrotech filters, you can re-use water more, and get better water quality as a result.

Microscreens are very efficient in handling large amounts of waste and filtered waste does not accumulate in the system.

Downstream sand- and membrane filters are then protected from dirt overloading, increasing significantly their performance and saving water.

The high quality of the water is achieved by a combination of UV/Ozone, membrane filtration and sandfilters.

Private Koi Ponds aim for prime quality and use Hydrotech in a recirculated system.
When you install a Hydrotech filter in a Koi pond system, you safeguard the biological water treatment system and secure cleaner water

Algae filtration

Microalgae have mostly been seen as a problem in our nature, but recently it has been found that microalgae hold a variety of essential opportunities.

Among others we can mention that Hydrotech filters are delivered for:

► Harvesting for biofuel production
► Harvesting for feed
► Harvesting for medical use
► Keeping lakes clean

This is a relative new application for Hydrotech, but our patented cellular structure in the filters suits the needs to convert to a harvesting machine.

Swimming pool water

Swimming pools, especially public ones, have a high content of bacteria, but thanks to new technology can keep them nice and clean with minimal chemicals.

New technology can reduce the added chlorine in swimming pools to a fraction of what is being used today.

The use of chlorine is becoming a major problem; it has been shown that commonly recommended levels of 1 ppm of chlorine concentrations significantly increases breathing trouble in even trained athletes.

The complete solution for environmental control of water and air in public swimming pools have been developed by Ultra-Aqua in Denmark through extensive testing, including other issues as water distribution in pools and ventilation in buildings.

As a key component, Hydrotech Drumfilters remove a major part of organic particles, one of the main problems in today's swimming pools.

As Hydrotech microscreen filtration in Swimming Pool Water is a relatively new application, Hydrotech ensures the best possible quality solution by partnering with the best specialists.
